Aaron McGowan got things going with a superb volley before Dara Costelloe’s opportunism gave Town breathing space at half-time. Cameron McGeehan was next to get on the act with his 10th of the season, followed by Costelloe thumping home his second of the afternoon. John Marquis’ stoppage-time effort was barely even a consolation for the already-relegated visitors. Here are our player ratings from Sixfields…

5. Aaron McGowan
He was the one who started at right wing-back, not Odimayo, and that decision paid off handsomely when he gave Cobblers the lead with a fantastic finish. Pinnock delivered the cross on a plate but he still had plenty to do and he did it brilliantly, arriving right on cue to volley home. Textbook wing-back play. He was full of grit and steeliness, determined to see the job through as the side's leader. Only injury ended his afternoon prematurely... 8 Photo: Pete Norton

6. Mitch Pinnock
On course to feature in every league game this season, starting all-but one of them, and he contributed significantly to this win. Produced a wonderful cross that was perfect for McGowan to volley in and his long ball then caused confusion that led to Costelloe making it two. It was also his delivery which culminated in another Blackman error, allowing McGeehan to prod home. Involved in countless other threatening attacks. His reliability and availability should never be taken for granted... 8 Photo: Pete Norton

7. Ben Perry
He's set the standard with a series of consistent performances and you can add this one to the collection. Drove Cobbles forward in the first half. Another one to pick up a needless booking though, leading to the decision to take him off. Shaw's season-ending injury back in February had many fearing the worst but he's stepped up so well and his partnership with Taylor has been the foundation of Town's excellent form under Nolan, which has seen them lose just three of their last 11 games... 7.5 Photo: Pete Norton

8. Terry Taylor
Not at his absolute best but still more than good enough to dominate in midfield, especially in the first half when his tidy work kept Cobblers on top and forced Shrewsbury to retreat. He's only been at Sixfields for three months but he's a huge reason why the club can look forward to another season of League One football... 7.5 Photo: Pete Norton
