NON-LEAGUE ROUND-UP: Daventry dealt damaging derby defeat

Darran Foster’s men looked to be heading for a crucial derby over rivals Rugby Town at Butlin Road as they led 1-0 through Ashley Robinson’s first-half strike with just 21 minutes remaining.

But strikes on 69 and 71 minutes from Rugby marksman David Kolodynski turned the game on its head.

Daventry responded to the double setback superbly and laid siege to the Rugby goal, but couldn’t find an equaliser.

Liam Dolman headed the ball against the post and substitute Scott Cross had two good shots saved by Rugby keeper Niall Cooper, but the home side held on.

Daventry had taken the lead on 27 minutes, Tom James stroking in a free kick from the left which found the head of Robinson who twisted and stretched to power in an unstoppable header.

Daventry Town are now in sixth place in the league, 12 points behind Rugby, but with five games in hand.

On Saturday they entertain Northwood at Communications Park.

BRACKLEY TOWN

Brackley were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Leamington in Skrill North on Boxing Day.

Jon Brady’s men enjoyed the better of the game, but were left frustrated with only a share of the points when no team in the top five could find a win.

Saints had to come from behind to bag a draw, with the equaliser coming from Brett Solkhon.

That fightback at least pleased manager Brady, who said: “We had a fair few chances and were the only team looking to win the game.

“They made it hard for us getting men behind the ball and we struggled to break them down.

“Looking ahead we need to cut out the defensive errors that are proving costly.

“We finished the game positively but perhaps the long FA Cup run has left us a bit jaded and the run of midweek games has left us carrying some niggling injuries.”

Brackley are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Histon.
