Nicky Adams in lockdown: staying motivated, keeping fit and the 'strange' feeling of training away from his team-mates

We've caught up with Cobblers club captain Nicky Adams to see how he's coping being away from his team-mates and training on his own during the enforced break from football.

"I think everyone is finding it strange and we're all finding it a bit difficult because we all love football and it's a major part of so many people's lives.

"So when it's taken away, it's difficult and what makes it harder is not knowing when we'll be able to come back and play.

"The powers that be are trying to get that sorted but it's important to stress that people's lives are at stake and the most biggest thing is people's health.

"Hopefully, over the next month or so, we get over the worst of the virus and people can get start to get back to their daily lives and we can find a solution.

"But for the moment we're just ticking over. All clubs will be the same up and down the country and we're all in the same position.

"It's difficult being on your own and training without your team-mates but you have to see it as a mental challenge more than anything.

"I'm treating it like when I had a bad injury a few years ago. It's a similar situation where I was out for about 10 months and for a lot of the training, especially for the first five or sixth months, I was doing it on my own.

"When I'm doing it I just think of that. This won't be as long as that but it's having that mentality of just getting through it when you train on your own.

"Our fitness coach, the physio and the gaffer and all of his staff have given us little things to do to keep us ticking over. They've been great and they've been in contact with us the whole time.

"You've got to keep yourself motivated because you have to be ready. I think they're hoping for a June restart and that's not too far away.

"You've got to have a bit of rest in there and you don't want to overdo it, but you also want to keep yourself ready because we want to hit the ground running when we get back into training mode.

"If we do restart the season again and play to a finish, you want to know that you did everything possible to be ready so everyone's doing what's right by them and we're all just getting on with it.

"When we come back, we'll probably have to do a mini pre-season anyway so we'll just keep ticking over and make sure we're ready for when the call comes."
