Curle has been out of the game since 2023 following short and unsuccessful spells in charge of Oldham and Hartlepool, but he now returns with Macclesfield, who play in the National League North.

A club statement confirmed: “The former England international, top-flight defender, and highly experienced Football League Manager arrives at the Leasing.com Stadium to spearhead the club’s long-term strategic and commercial vision. As such, Keith will take overall control of all operational matters and report directly into the board of directors.

“Keith will be supported by Bob Trafford, who will become deputy chief executive officer, together with a senior management team comprised of Amanda Penney, Lindsay Brown and Rachael Brown.

“Bringing an exceptional blend of elite football pedigree and over two decades of sharp commercial business acumen, Curle’s appointment represents a pivotal addition in our mission to progress back up through the football pyramid.”

Meanwhile, Cobblers academy product Morgan Roberts has decided to leave Brackley Town. The 25-year-old made 153 appearances for the Saints, scoring 25 goals, and was offered fresh terms at the end of last season, but he’s informed the club that he will not be sticking around..

He said: "So many memories to even list. So many highs and lows - but that's why we love football. The journey has been incredible and from signing as a young lad with little experience to leaving as a man with over 150 appearances for the club makes me thankful to everyone!

“I wish everyone involved with the club the absolute best to get back where you belong. To players, staff, volunteers and fans. I've loved every minute of this journey. Thank you!"
