Assistant head coach Paul Simpson admits Bristol City are likely to make multiple changes for tonight's visit of the Cobblers in round two of the Carabao Cup.

The Robins opened their Championship campaign by beating Coventry City at the weekend and with a trip to Stoke City to come on Sunday, they are looking to mix things up this evening.

"We want to win this game and the big thing is there will be a number of big changes for the Northampton game because we have to utilise the whole squad," said Simpson.

“They need match minutes, we need our players involved but we also feel we are putting out a strong squad to win the game.

"This will be a tough game against Northampton and without any disrespect to the competition or the opposition with the side, it will definitely be a side which is strong enough to get a result out of the game.”

Despite planning to field a much-changed line-up though, Simpson insists his side will not take their opponents lightly.

“We are not underestimating what to expect from Northampton," he added. "The players have to be ready; they have to be prepared to roll their sleeves up and work hard but let’s be honest, it’s not a real drag for any footballer to have to do that!

“The play-offs last season, in the final they really did turn over Exeter City. They have a style of play some will knock but it’s really effective.

"We know we’re in for a physical battle, we know they have players who can play and cause us problems and having known Keith, he will have those players fired up for this game with a winning mentality as well."
