Despite playing in the Championship for both Bristol City and Nottingham Forest, former full-back Brendan Moloney has labelled Cobblers' title-winning side as the 'best team' he played in during his 12-year career.

The 2015/16 campaign, Moloney's first full season at Northampton, will be remembered as one of the finest seasons in the club's history after they won both promotion and the title, finishing 13 points clear of the rest.

Moloney knew from an early stage that they were onto a good thing under Chris Wilder and Alan Knill, even when the team stuttered out of the blocks in August and September.

"I remember we didn't start the season very well at all but we kept our belief and a lot of that was down to Chris and Knilly," he said.

"We just didn't want to let them down and the minute we got on a winning run, it kind of went from there and every time we went into a game we were confident we were going to win.

"During the week there was such a great atmosphere around the place. Everyone was having a joke and a laugh but, at the same time, the competitiveness in training was off the chart. You wouldn't believe it.

"Everything considered, in terms of the spirit and quality, it was probably the best team I played in because you don't come across dressing rooms like that too often."

Asked where the title win ranks in his career, Moloney said: "It's right up there for me. Players can go through their whole careers and finish without winning something, which doesn't mean they're a bad player.

"Sometimes you need to be in the right place and be in the right team so to win the league and to win it the way we did was special, special moment. Not many teams do that.

"It was great fun to play in that team - it always is when you're playing alongside good players - and there was no let up even after we won the league. Demands were still put on us to go out and win the game and we just kept going, kept going and kept winning games.

"It was just the best season you could ask for. We got promoted with a few weeks to go, we won the title and it was just a great feeling and a great time for me and all of us."
