Cobblers manager Jon Brady has been thrilled with the form and fitness of young midfielder Shaun McWilliams this season.

The 22-year-old returned from a horror knee injury in October and has enjoyed his best campaign for the club, at least in terms of appearances having played 34 games, more than any other season.

He's also started the last 13 games in a row and has become a key component in Brady's first-choice midfield. Only four players in League One average more tackles per game than McWilliams (2.7).

"Shaun has done fantastically well this season," said Brady. "He's already made more appearances this season than any other and it's in League One as well so to be playing week in, week out consistently shows his value to the team and to the football club.

"The great thing about it all is that he's come through the academy and he's a local boy and that's huge for the club and he's really applied himself and done everything he can to make sure he's fit and strong.

"I've seen from the side over the years how frustrating it's been for him and a lot of managers but to have his attitude and his will to win and his desire to get the ball back for us and to work so hard is so big for us."

McWilliams signed a new one-year contract last summer but the club do have the option to extend his deal.

Brady added: "All discussions are looked after by senior management but Shaun will be with us next season, it's as simple as that."
