Alan McCormack admits he was ‘disappointed’ not to get the opportunity to play for the Cobblers in League One next season.

The veteran midfielder was one of 13 players released by manager Keith Curle just three days after Town’s play-off final victory over Exeter City.

And while he understands why Curle made that decision, he had hoped to stay at the club for another 12 months.

"Of course I understand his reasoning and I completely respect his decision - that's what managers have to do," he said.

"The reason behind it, I can understand it but I've still got a huge desire to play football and as long as I know I'm fit and I'm playing well, I feel I can hold my jersey against anyone.

"Obviously I'm disappointed not to get the opportunity to play with the club in League One next season because I've done it before with Luton when we've won promotion to League One and then got promoted straightaway again, so I know it's possible.

"I wanted to be part of it but it is what it is and that's football - these decisions need to be made and they are extremely difficult for managers. I've got the utmost respect for Keith and all of the staff at Northampton.

"I've loved the place and I've loved working for every single one of them and I wish everyone the best of luck next season. I'll move on and try and get myself a new club next season and continue to enjoy it and continue to fight every week to get three points.

"I've got no desire to hang up the boots just yet. Unless a really good opportunity comes up away from football, I want to get a contract somewhere next season."
