On-loan Baggies striker Morton 'taken aback' to win Player of the Month award

Callum Morton could hardly have wished for a better start to his Cobblers career.

The 20-year-old was an unknown quantity to the large majority of Cobblers supporters when he joined on loan from West Brom at the end of the January transfer window.

But a bright cameo off the bench against Scunthorpe in his first game, which included winning a late penalty, has been followed by five goals in eight appearances and an immediate bond with Town fans.

Morton was rewarded for his fine form with the February Player of the Month award in Sky Bet League Two and he admits even he is surprised by the ease with which he’s taken to League football.

“I knew I had a good month personally,” said the on-loan Baggies striker. “Some of our results haven’t been the best, but five goals wasn’t a bad start for my first month in the league.

“But when I heard I had won the award, I was a bit taken aback because I was out for a long time with injury and this is my first full month in the league.

“It’s gone as well as I could have expected - I’m probably doing better now than even last season when I was in the league below, which is obviously a great thing for me personally.”

Morton missed nine months after a cruciate ligament injury while on loan at Braintree Town last season but that time out only fuelled his desire to make it as a professional footballer.

“I’ve already scored the same amount of goals that I did last season in a higher league,” he added.

“I knew I was going to be out for a long time with the injury I picked up last season but coming back I’ve felt good for the last six weeks.

“I know the more games I play, the better I’m going to get and with the quality we’ve got in our team, playing up front is a relatively easy task.

“I want to score goals and also create chances as well. I like to chase lost causes and work hard. I’ve set a high standard but hopefully I can continue.”
