Cobblers have missed out on Callum Morton after the young striker signed for Lincoln City on a season-long loan from West Brom.

The 20-year-old was outstanding for the Cobblers in the second half of the 2018/19 campaign, scoring eight goals in 12 games including three in the play-offs.

Keith Curle was understandably keen to re-sign Morton for Town's return to League One, however it was confirmed earlier on Friday that he will instead be heading to Lincoln.

It is understood that Morton was keen on rejoining the Cobblers, however the influence of Imps boss Michael Appleton played a big role in West Brom's decision to send him to Sincil Bank.

Appleton spent some of his playing career at the Hawthorns and also had a spell in caretaker charge of the Baggies before being appointed U23s manager last year, working with Morton in the process.

“Callum came to the fore during the play-offs and every football fan would have watched him," said Appleton. "We have a really strong front line now, we are delighted to have him on board.”

Morton has also penned a new long-term deal at West Brom.
