No Sixfields return for Jake Evans as Leicester youngster signs for League Two rivals

It’s been confirmed that Jake Evans will not be returning to Sixfields this season after he joined a League Two rival.

The 17-year-old forward, who was born and raised in Moulton, scored two goals in 18 appearances during a promising loan spell at Northampton in the second half of last season.

In an interview towards towards the end of the campaign, Evans did not rule out a return to Sixfields. "I’d never say no to coming back here,” he said. “It’s my hometown club and it's my local team. I’ve got to give it my best shot back at Leicester in pre-season but I won’t say no to coming back to this club because I have enjoyed it here and this experience has set me up perfectly for next season.”

However, Cobblers never showed a serious interest in re-signing Evans this summer and it’s now been confirmed that he’s joined League Two rivals Cheltenham Town on loan for the 2026/27 season, where he’ll team up with Shaun McWilliams. He’s also signed a new three-year deal at Leicester.

“I’m over the moon to be here,” said Evans. “I have spoken to the gaffer on a few occasions now and I can’t help but feel excited and ready to go. I have had a taste of senior football and I just want more, I can’t wait to play for the gaffer and the Robins fans, I will give my all for this football club.”

Manager Steve Cotterill added: “Jake has been one of my targets throughout the summer. He is an exciting player, there was a lot of interest in Jake from League Two and higher up the pyramid and I am delighted to welcome him to the football club.

“As well as being an exciting player it is also worth remembering that he is a young man learning his trade in the men’s game. I look forward to working with him.”
