Kevin Nolan delivers transfer update as Cobblers push to get deals done

Cobblers are in ‘constant contact’ with players and agents as they look to bolster their squad this month, but manager Kevin Nolan says it is ‘difficult’ to get business done quickly.

Town have already had a busy month having sent Jordan Thorniley back to Oxford and seen Ethan Wheatley’s loan from Manchester United cut short, while Kyle Edwards and Ross Fitzsimons have signed new deals. Centre-back Elliott Moore remains the only new arrival since the window opened.

Nolan is well aware of the need for further reinforcements and his recruitment team remain in talks with numerous players and agents, but ultimately they are at the mercy of clubs higher up the pyramid.

"It’s difficult because you’re looking at players and you’re wanting to do business but talks are ongoing all of the time,” said Nolan.” There’s clear communication with the board, with James (Whiting) and with Kelvin (Thomas) and Colin (Calderwood).

"We’re working really hard off the pitch and behind the scenes to make things happen. Obviously we want things done sooner rather than later but some other clubs want to wait and sometimes players want to wait as well and we have to make sure the right one comes in.

"I always say it – they have to be 100 per cent in. This squad is built of lads who wanted to join Northampton in the summer and we’re trying to create a camaraderie because that goes a long way, especially in a league as tough as this one.

"We're in constant contact with agents and they’re then relaying things to players and to clubs. I hope we have some good news and that we’ll be bringing someone in but, again, it has to be right and it has to add something different to the squad.”

Nolan believes Cobblers are an attractive club for players, adding: "I think people realise they will get an opportunity at this club and we have two people who have played at the top end of the game for a long time in myself and Colin and we know how clubs want their players to be treated. We respect that and we do it the right way.

"We have had lots of good feedback and we have plenty of people ringing us and offering more players that we probably need because they see what we’re doing here, but it’s up to us to find the right ones. We’re pleased with our last couple of windows and hopefully this will be another good one.”
