Keith Curle: Some people might say it's not pleasing on the eye - but there's a reason why we play the way we do

While there was understandable praise for two-goal hero Callum Morton, Cobblers boss Keith Curle was otherwise reluctant to pick out individuals from an 'excellent team performance' after Monday's superb 3-0 win at Cheltenham Town.

After Vadaine Oliver headed Cobblers back into the tie on just nine minutes, Morton scored twice in the second-half to complete an extraordinary turnaround.

The 20-year-old now has seven goals in 11 appearances since signing on loan for the Cobblers from West Brom in January.

"We tried to get Callum just over a year ago when he was at Braintree so he's been on the radar for a while," said Curle. "I think he's a great talent, he's got great hungry and he'll score goals.

"Callum did everything we needed him to do on Monday but this was about an excellent team performance and a unity. We had an understanding all over the pitch of our roles and responsibilities.

"We knew we needed to get more numbers in and around the forward players and we always know that, with our gameplan, we can put teams under pressure."

Curle has faced criticism this season for his direct, sometimes belligerent style of football but he believes Monday's performance and victory was justification for his approach.

"Some people might say we play the ball back to front a lot but there's a reason why we play the way we do," he added. "There's a belief in what we do and, on our day, it's going to be difficult for anyone to play against.

"Some people will say it's not pleasing on the eye - but I bet it makes for great television!"

Reacting further to his side's remarkable victory at Whaddon Road, Curle continued: "I mentioned beforehand that a 2-0 lead is a difficult lead, especially when going into a second leg at home.

"Obviously I'm not saying it's not undefendable but it's a mental challenge for their players because they needed to make sure they got the first goal and make it 3-0 and put the game out of sight and then see the reaction of us.

"We know what it feels like when you're 2-0 up and the opposition score. We wanted Cheltenham to have that feeling because we thought we could impose ourselves.

"As a footballing department, we give Cheltenham a lot of credit. They've done extremely well with a good young manager and he's very honest and very robust in what he wants to do.

"But we take a lot of credit and a lot of praise from going up against them and competing."
