O'Brien-Whitmarsh 'really bought into' Cobblers after attending Swindon game

New Cobblers signing Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh says he ‘really bought into’ the club after meeting manager Chris Hogg and attending Saturday’s League Two game against Swindon Town.

The versatile midfielder, who primarily plays as a number 10 but can also operate deeper, attracted interest from several clubs this summer, but he’s put pen to paper on a three-year deal at Sixfields.

“The last few days have been pretty full on to be honest,” said the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international. “I came to the game on Saturday and I really enjoyed it. It was a good game to watch and I thought the boys played well and the fans were great. It was a really positive first impression.

“There’s been a lot of conversations behind the scenes and I’ve been up here speaking with the club over the last couple of days and I’m just happy to get it over the line.”

In a recurring theme this summer, the clarity and tactical detail of Hogg was a key factor in O’Brien-Whitmarsh’s decision.

“The gaffer was a major selling point for me,” he explained. “He spoke about what he wants from his teams and I think that aligns pretty well with me and my game. There was other interest but once I chatted with the manager and saw the team play, I really bought into it.

“There’s also a bit of security with the three-year deal and that gives me a chance to settle in, but I feel ready to hit the ground running. In my eyes I’ve been playing in the under-21s for a bit too long so I’m ready to get going now and I’m really excited for it.”

Reflecting on his career to date, the 21-year-old added: “I joined Southampton from Cork a couple of years ago and then had a short loan with Accrington. That had some good moments but it was only a short spell and now I feel ready to be a full-time senior player and be a regular at this level.

“It’s a tough league but I spoke about the gaffer and he knows what he wants and how he wants to play and I think it suits me. I hope I can come in and help the team. I’m really looking forward to it.”
