Experienced midfielder Alan McCormack said he had a 'big feeling' about the Cobblers when he signed for the club last summer following Monday's thrilling play-off final victory over Exeter City.

The 36-year-old won successive promotions with Luton Town in 2018 and 2019 but was released by the club at the end of last season.

However, he's once again celebrating a promotion - his third in a row - after playing a crucial role during Town's incredible play-off campaign that included crushing defeats of Cheltenham Town and Exeter.

They sealed the deal at Wembley last night as Ryan Watson, Callum Morton, Sam Hoskins and Andy Williams fired them to a memorable 4-0 victory.

"You've got to have a feeling at the start of a season when you speak to managers and you speak to people about a club," said McCormack.

"I spoke to a few people about Northampton and I just had a big feeling about this club and about the manager in terms of what we wanted to do and how we wanted to play.

"OK, we changed our style of play a little bit, but at the end of the day, it's all about results. You can play the best football in the league but if you don't win games, the manager loses his job.

"It's all about winning. It probably wasn't the prettiest game but we controlled it from start to finish.

"They had a little spell when they changed their shape in the second-half but all in all we kept our focus and 4-0 in a final, who'd have thought it!"

Like at Whaddon Road seven days earlier, Cobblers raced out of the blocks against Exeter and took the game by the scruff of the neck.

"It was more about belief," added McCormack. "We knew it would be difficult to repeat the energy and performance from last week but we knew we had the belief that we could beat any team in this division.

"We started very well, we scored early in the game and then got a second and it could have been three or four before half-time.

"We've been the best team from set-pieces in the league and we knew that would be a massive strength."

And will he stay for another season? "That's the manager's decision!"
