Hogg rues costly 15-minute spell after Crewe defeat

Cobblers boss Chris Hogg rued the 15-minute spell after half-time that cost his team dear during their 1-0 defeat to Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.

Having had the better of the first half, Town were under pressure at the start of the second but they looked to be weathering the storm until disaster struck. Goalkeeper Zach Jeacock, not realising what was behind him, rolled the ball out and Josh March, who was hiding behind the post, nipped in and rolled the ball into the net.

What disappointed Hogg most was his side’s lack of a response to going behind, and they only applied pressure in the closing stages, with Elliott List going closest to salvaging a point when denied by Crewe goalkeeper Tom Booth.

“I’m disappointed with the result,” said Hogg. “I thought we had really good spells in the first half and we had control of the game. Everything we talked about before the game we did to an OK level without the end product.

“We got into good areas and we hit the post couple of times, but we should have made more of the chances we had and you always know it’s going to be a slightly different game in the second half.

“We concede the goal and the momentum shifts and then we had a spell for 15 minutes where we lost our way and the game got away from us. They went a bit more direct and put it on us a bit more after half-time.

“We dealt with that OK but then the goal happens and you could feel the energy of the ground change. They had a real lift. We had a bit of a push at the end but we didn’t work their goalkeeper enough.”
