Hasselbaink: Northampton is a 'magnificent club' - I wish SAC well
Former Cobblers boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink hopes new owners Sports Alpha Capital can ‘steer the club in the right direction’ following their recent takeover.
The 54-year-old Dutchman, who is currently an assistant coach for the Suriname national team, managed Northampton during the 2017/18 season. He also had spells in charge of Burton and Queens Park Rangers.

Hasselbaink was appointed by then-chairman Kelvin Thomas in 2017 but lasted less than a season as Cobblers were relegated from League One. New co-chairmen and SAC founders João Xavier and Tim Chamberlain are now the men making the decisions after acquiring a 70 per cent stake in the club alongside their business partners and investors.
Speaking to MrQ, Hasselbaink was asked if he would have liked more financial backing during his time in charge, replying:“I would have done, but unfortunately that wasn't the case, so I wish the club really well.
“It's a magnificent club with a lot of possibilities, opportunities, and hopefully this new owner can really steer them in the right direction and make them a proper, stable club.
“It’s good to hear. I know about the old regime. They tried to do it well, but it was always a battle with the finances, and hopefully now with the new owners, they can sort that out.”
Hasselbaink was also asked if he think Northampton can replicate Wrexham’s success. The Welsh club won three successive promotions from non-league to the Championship under co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
“I think that has already been done,” said Hasselbaink. “There is no Wrexham. I think you have to now do something different. Wrexham have done it ever so well, but it's now a different kind of structure that you have to put together for it to be new and make it work.”
