Cardiff City manager Neil Harris knows his side will have to be up for the 'physical' challenge presented by the Cobblers in Saturday's Carabao Cup first-round tie.

Keith Curle's side were known for their direct and physical style last season, an approach that served them so well in their successful play-off campaign.

Although a number of influential players have left the club this summer, Curle is likely to stick with a similar style as his side step up a level this season, starting against a team who made the Championship play-offs last year.

“They're now a League One side that did have success in the play-offs, so they are up to speed in comparison to other teams," said Harris.

“I watched their play-off games and they are a direct side. They get the ball forward quickly, they're good at set-plays and get after you all over the pitch. It’ll be a real physical battle.

“They’ve got players who can win matches in different ways, set-plays or open play.”

Harris will have nine first-team players unavailable for tomorrow's game but he remains determined to reach round two of the competition.

“I like cup competitions, especially the way it’s fallen at the moment, it’s a good opportunity to get minutes into players," he added.

“It’s a chance for us to bed down formations and style of play, reminders to players, integrate players and young players.

“We see it as a potentially difficult away at Northampton but a chance to get through as well, playing a team from the league below and keep players happy, giving them minutes.

“I do see these early rounds as important.”
