Cobblers central defender Jon Guthrie has spoken of the immense pride he felt when told by manager Jon Brady that he would be club captain this season.

The 30-year-old has taken over armband duties from the now retired Joseph Mills and will have Aaron McGowan as his deputy when the right-back returns from injury.

"It’s a great honour,” said Guthrie. “I am very proud to be captain of this club.

"It was something I wanted to do. I had a conversation with the gaffer and he thought I was the right man to do it.

"Looking at the team, I am one the older players – actually, I’ll say more experienced! – but it’s a great honour and I look forward to doing it over the rest of the season.”

Guthrie skippered Northampton in their opening two league games and will likely wear the armband again on Tuesday night when Wycombe visit Sixfields in the Carabao Cup.

"Every club and every player wants to go on a cup run and we know it will be a tough game,” Guthrie added.

"Wycombe are a good team but we fancy ourselves against anyone at home and we do speak about going on a cup run because it's good for the club and we will hopefully kick-start that on Tuesday."
