Guinness-Walker wanted 'new challenge' after rejecting new Cobblers deal

Nesta Guinness-Walker says the desire for ‘a new chapter and a new challenge’ was his chief reason for leaving Cobblers and joining SPL side Aberdeen.

The experienced left-back was well-liked during his time at Sixfields, winning the club’s Player of the Year award at the end of last season, but he turned down the chance to stay, and this week his move to Scotland was confirmed.

“It was something as soon as Aberdeen showed interest I was eager to get it over the line,” said Guinness-Walker. “I have a few friends and old team-mates who have played in Scotland. They were like Aberdeen are a big club and if you get the opportunity you don’t say no.

“It is a new chapter and a new challenge and something I’m really looking forward to. The club speaks for itself. It’s rich history. You see things on social media about the club and the fans, to be part of that and speaking to the manager as well was a big thing. He gave me a call and the ambition for this season and the years after, that is something I am very keen to be a part of.

“How he feels he can also improve me as a player, which is something I am really eager to do. I am 26 and I have a good level of experience behind me at the level, League One and the Championship.”

Cameron McGeehan also rejected the offer of a new deal at Northampton before turning up at former club Barnsley. The 31-year-old has penned a one-year deal with the League One Tykes.

"It’s a great feeling to be back, a bit surreal, and I’m excited for what's to come,” said the midfielder. “A lot has changed in my life since I was last here but it feels like being home and playing under the manager again was a massive reason.

“It was a big decision, and there was a bit of interest in the summer, but I’m really hungry and I want to fulfil my potential because I don’t feel like I’ve done that. Of all the options I had this summer, this was the one that gave me the best feeling.

“Coming back from Belgium was tough but I’ve worked my way up and Barnsley felt like the right next step for me – I feel I have unfinished business here.”
