Former Cobblers defender Charlie Goode has no desire to stop at the Championship after his move to Brentford this week.

The 25-year-old has worked his way from non-league all the way up to the second tier of English football having signed a four-year contract with the Bees on Wednesday.

He left the Cobblers for a club record fee and joins a team who have Premier League ambitions following their near miss last season.

"I'm delighted to be here," said Goode. "It's been a long few weeks since I first heard about the interest but to now have it all done, I'm buzzing.

"I enjoyed a very good season with Northampton and we ended it with promotion, but I'm an ambitious person and I want to play at the highest level possible so I'm ready to push on in the Championship.

"Looking at what Brentford did last season and the run they went on after lockdown, I wanted to be a part of that. They were very unfortunate not to go up but the style of play, the club, the new stadium... it's a team that's really on the rise and I want to be involved in it.

"I also spoke to Macca (Alan McCormack) because he did so well at Brentford and he spoke very highly about the club and that only made my decision easier."

Goode was released by Fulham at the age of 16 but battled his way back via several non-league clubs before his career took off at the Cobblers.

"I started off at a professional club at a young age but at the time I was deemed too small to progress so I had to go out and work my way up through non-league," he added.

"To get to the Championship is a good achievement for me but I don't want to stop here - I want to keep progressing.

"I can't wait to meet the lads now and get used to the new surroundings and then crack on with the new season."
