Cobblers interim boss Jon Brady has confirmed Jonathan Mitchell is his 'number one' choice between the sticks - at least for the time being.

The 26-year-old, on a season-long loan from Derby County, has started all four matches under Brady and kept clean sheets against Rochdale and Ipswich Town.

He made one excellent and point-saving stop in both of those games, although he did come under scrutiny after conceding four times at MK Dons last Saturday.

Previous manager Keith Curle would quite often chop and change his goalkeeper and didn't view either Mitchell or Steve Arnold as his number one, but Brady sees it differently.

"At the moment, Mitch is our number one because he's got the shirt and he's doing fantastically well," said Town's caretaker manager.

"We've talked about the chances we had the other night and also at Ipswich but Ipswich had one good chance and Rochdale also had one good chance and Mitch really came to the fore for us.

"I thought his kicking into the wind in the second-half was excellent. You saw their goalkeeper in the first-half, it was almost like a comedy sketch at times because he kicked it and it nearly went back into his penalty area!

"The wind was blowing hard but Mitch was strong and he was confident and at the moment, he's number one.

"Arnie is fantastically supportive of Mitch whilst he's number one. I wouldn't have it any other way but what a great character to support his team-mate like that.

"He's great within the group and he's fighting for his life to get the number one spot as well. You've got to try and get the right balance but they're a real good group with Dan (Watson), our goalkeeping coach. He's done an amazing job with them to get them to the best they can be."
