The two teams achieved promotion in very different ways. While Chris Wilder's relentless team romped to the title by 13 points, Keith Curle's Cobblers sealed their return to the third tier thanks to a brace of remarkable play-off victories.
But the two sides have their similarities too, not least the unity and togetherness displayed during difficult times, and they are also both laced with quality all over the pitch.
That makes for some tricky decisions when combining the two, although a lot depends on the formation you want to go with. To keep things simple, we've stuck with a straightforward 4-4-2.
Here's who makes our team...
1. Goalkeeper: Adam Smith
It's perhaps the trickiest position of all. Steve Arnold didn't play enough to quality and while David Cornell was mostly excellent earlier in the season, Smith's superb shot-stopping was vital to the title win under Wilder. Photo: Pete Norton
2. Right-back: Brendan Moloney
Again, by no means an obvious selection, especially after Michael Harriman's heroics in the recent League Two play-offs, but Moloney was brilliant at both ends of the pitch for the Cobblers in 2016. Photo: Pete Norton
3. Centre-back: Charlie Goode
Goode, by contrast, goes straight into the team without any hesitation. Superb for the Cobblers in 2019/20 and was as important as anyone in securing promotion back to League One. Photo: Pete Norton
4. Centre-back: Zander Diamond
Cobblers have been spoilt for choice at centre-back in recent years. Honourable mentions go to Scott Wharton and Jordan Turnbull, but Diamond was imperious for Wilder's title winners four years ago. Photo: Pete Norton
