Exeter boss confirms whether he'll be in the dugout for Cobblers game after Wigan Athletic links

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell expects to be in the dugout for Saturday’s visit of Northampton despite reports linking him to the vacant role at former club Wigan Athletic.

An ex-Latics manager and player, Caldwell is one of the strong favourites to return to the Brick Community Stadium after Ryan Lowe was sacked last week. Wigan are currently in the relegation zone and were beaten 2-1 by Reading on Tuesday in their first game after Lowe’s departure.

“I'll be here for Saturday,” confirmed Caldwell on Thursday. “I know that. Beyond that? I don't know, I don't know, beyond anything in life, I think. All I can focus on is the next training session, the next game and I'll be here for Saturday, and I'm looking forward to it.”

Caldwell said he had not been contacted by Wigan but he stopped short of ruling himself out of the running, adding: “I can tell you that it's a club, obviously very close to my heart. I played for them, coached, managed but I've been working extremely hard this week for Exeter. I'm the Exeter manager and we have a massive game on Saturday.

"I had my board meeting this morning, I trained again today with the players, we'll do it again tomorrow. Interest comes when teams do well and we have done incredibly well as a team – my team of staff, the players have been incredible this season.

"The Wigan job's up so I'd like to think the success that we've had would put us in for that, the Tottenham job's up, the Nottingham Forest job's up. So I would like to think that a team that's doing really well, overachieving for what we should be doing at this level, then yes, that's why the link's come."
