Duo's return delights Brady as subs all make an impact for Cobblers

Jack Sowerby and Patrick Brough both made welcome returns at the weekend as all five subs had an impact in the second half of Saturday’s goalless draw with Burton Albion.

Neither Sowerby nor Brough had featured since last season but they were both introduced for the final 20 minutes at Sixfields as Cobblers kept their first clean sheet of the campaign.

"The clean sheet is a real positive and that's important for us,” said manager Jon Brady. “Jack (Baldwin) came in and I thought he did well alongside Jon (Guthrie) at the back and it was nice to have Patrick Brough and Jack Sowerby back on the pitch.

"We reduced Burton to shots from distance. There's the one that Orsi puts miles wide but it was offside anyway and I was pleased with the way we nullified them.

"It's so good to have Jack back out there but I thought Samy Chouchane was really good on the ball again. That's only his second start in the EFL and Will (Hondermarck) played well alongside him but they were both on bookings and I had to make a decision.”

Sowerby and Brough both did well in their short cameos against Burton, and Akin Odimayo, Liam McCarron and James Wilson also all contributed as substitutes.

"I made the subs because I felt the game had gone dead and we wanted to add some energy to the side,” Brady added. “We pushed and we pushed and we nearly stole it at the end.

"But we're still building and we're improving all the time and quite a few players came in late. We're gelling the squad and Robbo's doing the same at Burton and it's going to take time. As long as we keep improving and keep edging forward, that's all we can ask for.”

Cobblers don’t have a game this weekend due to the international break. Brady continued: "We'll have to get the balance right over the next two weeks. There'll be a bit of rest and recuperation. Some players need to work and with the bumps, knocks, injuries we have, it gives us a chance to get those sorted and hopefully they can come back in and be in and around it before our next game.”
