Daventry boss Foster full of pride despite FA Cup defeat at Chesterfield

The Purple Army gave as good as they got for long periods against the Sky Bet League Two high-flyers, but a 69th-minute strike from Gary Roberts and a late effort from Jimmy Ryan secured the win for the home side.

Foster was delighted with how his side played in front of a crowd of 5,269 at the Proact Stadium, but admitted there was a twinge of regret they couldn’t complete what would have been a stunning giant-killing.

“I am gobsmacked, I thought the lads were were absolutely brilliant. I am so proud of them,” said Foster.

“They have come to here play a really good team, and we knew it was going to be tough.

“But I felt at times in the first half we actually shaded it, and we had two or three chances to score.

“If we had taken one of them it could have been a whole lot different, but it wasn’t to be.

“If you don’t take your chances you will get punished by good sides, and that is what happened today.”

Daventry were cheered on by a travelling army of 750 supporters from Northants, and Foster also wanted to thank them for their support.

“We knew the following was going to be good, because we have been selling tickets all week and we have all been involved in that,” said the Daventry boss.

“But to see on the scoreboard behind the goal that there were 750 Daventry fans was something else.

“It brought tears to my eyes. I had family in the stand, and up in the VIP area, and it was emotional I have to be honest.

“The support was simply tremndous.”

There were a couple of injury concerns for Daventry, with skipper Liam Dolman damaging a hamstring, and Mykel Beckley being stretchered off after a collison with Chesterfield’s Ollie Banks.

The result is not good for Dolman, who looks like facing three to four weeks on the sidelines, but Beckley should be okay after suffering a cut on his shin.
