Keith Curle expects new signing Jack Sowerby to 'hit the ground running' after the midfielder completed his move from Fleetwood Town last week.

The 25-year-old was not registered in time to feature at Shrewsbury last weekend but could be in contention for the visit of Hull City on Saturday.

Curle has long been an admirer of Sowerby and believes he has all the attributes to deliver the goods this season.

"He's a good player," said Curle. "A good technician and he has good hunger and good thirst.

"He can be creative, he has an eye for goal, he can get forward and I like his work ethic and his desire to do well, but he's nowhere near the finished article.

"For him to have a career, I think he knows this is a move where he has to hit the ground running and he's got to deliver.

"The players that face those sort of challenges are players that I want to surround myself with because they automatically bring a hunger to the squad and in every training session he wants to improve, he wants to impress and he wants to get in the team."

Sowerby sees himself as a box-to-box midfielder but Curle says he can play in a variety of positions.

"I think the lad can play anywhere across the midfield and he can also play behind the striker and in wide areas and he can also be the link from the midfield to the striker," added the Town boss.

"He can play as a holding midfield player as well because he can handle a football, he can see a pass and he's got the dynamics to get past opponents and he can go and close opponents down and stop them from playing where they want to.

"He has the energy levels, the desire and the willingness to stop the opposition, then when we get the ball, he can use it. He's got a good passing range, good vision and he's a good technician."
