Keith Curle has confirmed former midfielder Alan McCormack is currently training with the Cobblers.

The 36-year-old joined Northampton from Luton last summer but was released by Curle after the play-off final in June and has yet to find a new club.

McCormack is now back at the PTS Academy Stadium to keep up his fitness should he get a deal elsewhere, however currently there's no plan for him to return to the Cobblers.

"I spoke to Alan in the summer and he's got a desire to play," Curle told the Cobblers Show on BBC Radio Northampton.

"He wants to pursue a career in coaching eventually and he's exploring some avenues in terms of going down the director of football route but ultimately he still wants to play competitively week in, week out.

"That's important for Alan and he wants a new challenge. The one thing he needs is to maintain a level of fitness so when he does get an opportunity - and I'm sure he will do - he's up to full speed and he's able to play week in, week out for somebody."

Curle also confirmed that the Cobblers asked West Brom about the possibility of signing Callum Morton prior to him signing a new four-year deal with the Baggies.

"Yes, we did," he said. "There was interest shown from a few Premier League and Championship clubs with a view to buying him.

"I had a conversation with the chairman and the chairman said we want to be in there too so let's talk to West Brom about that possibility.

"But they wanted to get Callum to sign a new contract because they saw a long-term future with him."

But there are no hard feelings over Morton's move to League One rivals Lincoln City, with Curle adding: "Ultimately, we borrowed one of their players and we massively profited because West Brom saw us as part of his development.

"It's all about opinions and in their opinion, for them to get a more rounded player, they felt Callum needed to go and experience a different brand of football to us.

"Personally, I disagreed completely, but if you have a different opinion, you don't fall out, you have to respect it - even more so when you're dealing with one of their players."
