Goalkeeper David Cornell felt Ipswich Town represented the ideal place to take his career to the 'next step' after leaving the Cobblers at the end of last season.

The 29-year-old Welshman, who was brought to Sixfields by Rob Page in 2016, racked up over 100 appearances in four seasons at Northampton.

But he was not offered a new deal by Keith Curle when his contract expired following the play-off final as both parties agreed it was the time right to part ways.

Sunderland and Derby were among those rumoured to be interested in Cornell's services, but fellow League One club Ipswich have won the race for his signature.

"I'm delighted to sign up and I can't wait to get started," said Cornell.

"I think this is the next step in my career towards where I want to get to. It's a club with high ambitions and I really wanted to be part of it and that's why I decided to join.

"It's been hard being at the training ground over the last few days and not being able to train with the boys but hopefully we can start afresh and get going.

"The manager has been really positive and I really liked what I heard from him - we both have the same ambition and that's to get the club back to the Championship.

"It’s going to be a little different for the first couple of months with no fans but I’m looking forward to playing here and the fans being back in - and hopefully having a successful season."
