Cobblers to target 'premium loans' - but Hogg 'believes in permanent signings'

Chris Hogg says the club are working hard to ensure they’re ‘ahead of the game’ when it comes to ‘premium loans’ this summer – but his priority will be permanent additions.

From Marc Leonard and Kieron Bowie to Terry Taylor and Ethan Wheatley, Cobblers have had plenty of success with loan players in recent seasons, and the club will once again look to use that market this summer.

However, the best and most sought after players from Premier League and Championship clubs are unlikely to be available until later in the summer due to the ongoing 2026 World Cup in USA, Mexico and Canada.

"There isn't a huge rush for clubs to get players out but where we're improving, and what we have to improve further, is making sure we are ahead of the game in terms of the preparation that goes into signing players,” explained Hogg.

"We need to identify the players early and build a clear picture of what we want so we can get into the race for the key ones. There will be some premium loan players, and the club have done really well with those type of loanees over the years, but they'll be available later in the summer. It's up to us to do the work to identify them and put ourselves in a position to compete and bring in the best possible loan players.

"But, fundamentally, I believe in bringing permanent signings to the football club because we have to try and develop our own players and have players here who, in 18 months or in two years, they’re in a position where we've given them a platform and it really benefits the football club.”

Cobblers remain in talks with an investment group which, if successful, would potentially impact the club’s transfer budget.

"It’s just business as usual for us at the moment,” insisted Hogg. “We can’t control that. I know that Kelvin (Thomas) and James (Whiting) are doing a lot of work behind the scenes but I have parameters that I’m working within and that doesn’t change. I just want the best possible people and the best possible players to come to Northampton to help us be successful.”
