Cobblers chairman Kelvin Thomas has welcomed today's decision to call off the 2019/20 Sky Bet League Two season and decide the final standings via a points-per-game method.

At a meeting on Friday, the EFL asked for an indicative view from teams on how to finish the season and all 24 clubs on the call, including Northampton, felt that both the safety considerations and financial implications would make it impossible to play all remaining fixtures.

A formal vote will be held after League One and the Championship decide how to end their seasons, but it is hoped that the play-offs can still take place. That would involve the Cobblers, as well as Exeter, Colchester and Cheltenham.

Thomas said: “Today’s meeting was good as it has started to give us some clarity on the conclusion of the 2019/20 season so that we can start to plan for the future. Obviously there are a lot of details that will still need to be finalised, but we can now start to see the road ahead.

“We know the EFL have a lot of work to do, so we will patiently await the outcome of that work, but as a club we will continue to plan for all eventualities.

“The club’s response to this crisis has been magnificent and it has really shown us to be a pillar in the community. Our thoughts remain with those who have been and are currently affected by the virus, but we thank everyone who has supported us during this time and hopefully we can now also start putting the blocks in place for recovery.”
