Cobblers striker Alex Revell is to see a specialist later this week regarding the calf muscle injury that has kept him out of action since January.

The 33-year-old initally suffered the injury in the 5-3 defeat at Milton Keynes Dons on January 21, lasting just 23 minutes of Justin Edinburgh’s first game in charge of the club.

He was initially scheduled to return to playing action by the end of February, but he suffered a setback in training ahead of the trip to Fleetwood, and has yet to appear.

It had been hoped the former Rotherham United and Cardiff City man would be available sooner rather than later, but Town assistant boss Dave Kerslake has revealed the frontrunner has yet to return to the training pitch, and will see a specialist later this week.

“He saw somebody on Monday, and I think there has been an improvement on it,” said Kerslake when asked about Revell’s injury.

“We’ll now have to wait until Thursday as I think he had an injection into the calf, the tendon, and he has to go back and see the consultant on Thursday.”

Kerslake confirmed that the player has just been doing gym-work and has yet to get back out doing any sort of ball-work on the training ground.

Aside from Revell and fellow long-term injury absentees Sam Hoskins and Gaby Zakuani, the Cobblers are set to have a fully-fit squad to pick from for Saturday’s Sky Bet League One clash with Oxford United at Sixfields.

There were no fresh injury concerns from the 2-1 weekend defeat at Bolton Wanderers.
