Cobblers were keen to get minutes into their players as they will now have to wait until February 6 for their next Sky Bet League Two fixture, against York City at Sixfields.

Town were due to play at Oxford United on Saturday, but the Yellows are in FA Cup action, against Blackburn Rovers.

And after the victory at Stevenage, assistant boss Knill said: “In this two-week break between games we wanted to get some minutes into the legs of a few of the boys.

“Those involved showed a fantastic attitude and turned in an excellent performance, we were really pleased with them.

“Some of the boys who have been on the bench haven’t played for a few weeks so it was important to keep them sharp and ready as we will be entering a busy period for the first team when we resume matches a week on Saturday.”

The Oxford clash has been rearranged for Tuesday, February 16, and Cobblers have already sold more than 250 tickets for the Sky Bet League Two showdown.
