Cobblers secure first away win of 2026 at 10-man Grimsby - but game marred by horror injury

Cobblers claimed their first away league victory of 2026 when they beat 10-man Grimsby Town 2-0 at Blundell Park on Saturday - but the game was overshadowed by a horrible injury suffered by Edon Pruti.

The first half was arguably Northampton’s best 45 minutes of football all season, certainly up until Matty Warhurst’s brilliantly-taken opener. The visitors created all of the chances and finally took one when Warhurst drilled home 11 minutes before the break.

The goal seemed to stir Grimsby into life and they had opportunities to level in a strong spell either side of half-time, but their failure to convert was punished by skipper Jon Guthrie when he poked home from a corner on the hour.

Following that came a shocking collision between Joe Wormleighton and Pruti, which saw the Grimsby player both sent off and stretchered off with what looked like a broken leg.

The final 35 minutes were a non-event, somewhat unsurprisingly given the circumstances, as Cobblers easily and comfortably saw out a long, long awaited away victory.

Chris Hogg stuck with the same team that drew at York last weekend and his team were immediately on the front foot with Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh’s attemped pass to Owen Dale ricocheting to Warhurst, whose shot was beaten away by Christy Pym.

Town had started well and they continued to take the game to their hosts, going close three times in quick succession. Connor Evans’ effort was headed away from the goal-line, Janoi Donacien’s follow-up was blocked and then Elliott Moore’s side-foot from the resulting corner was straight at Pym.

The opportunities kept coming for the away side and they kept being passed up as a lovely move involving Connor and Lee Evans led to the former standing up a cross to Warhurst, who was unmarked at the back post, but he scuffed his volley and missed the target.

The game settled down somewhat but the moans and groans from home supporters grew louder as their team continued to struggle, with Pym called upon again when at full stretch to tip wide Dale’s low shot.

Grimsby eventually threatened themselves on the half-hour, Zach Jeacock called into action to keep out Iwan Morgan after the hosts had cleared a Town corner and broken the length of the field.

But not one person in the ground could have argued that Cobblers didn’t deserve the lead that was given to them by Warhurst 11 minutes before half-time. Once again Grismby couldn’t cope with the away side’s press, losing possession in their own half and Connor Evans picked it up, found Warhurst and he arrowed a fine finish into the bottom corner.

Grimsby, to their credit, reacted well to the setback and had several chances to level before half-time. Justin Amaluzor dragged just wide before he then drew a smart stop from Jeacock, and Town’s goalkeeper also kept out Kieran Green.

The hosts went close again at the start of the second half, Charles Vernam striking the woodwork, and the same man really should have drawn Grimsby level when blazing over with the goal at his mercy.

Hogg needed to stem Grimsby’s momentum and he attempted to do so by replacing O’Brien-Whitmarsh with Elliott List, and he couldn’t have wished for a quicker impact. List won a corner on the left, Lee Evans’ deep delivery was headed back across goal by Elliott Moore and there was Guthrie to poke into the net to double the away side’s advantage.

Then came a sickening, horrible incident. Wormleighton and Pruti clattered into each other at full pace when going for the ball, and the referee deemed it worthy of a straight red card. More worringly though was the injury Pruti suffered, with both sets of players frantically waving on the physios. He was eventually stretchered off after a seven-minute delay.

That, understandably, took all the sting out of the game and both teams struggled to get going again. List went close for Cobblers while Andy Cook headed over for Grimsby before 12 minutes were added at the end of the 90.

Virtually nothing happened in that time, however, and Town were never going to relinquish their position as they finally won on the road for the first time in nearly 11 months.
