Cobblers players and staff will all be tested for coronavirus on Thursday ahead of a return to training next Monday.

Although the EFL and FA have yet to formally ratify the decision to play the League Two play-offs - something which is expected to come next week - Cobblers are already stepping up their plans to ensure they are primed and ready for action when called upon.

Clubs have been given strict guidelines by the EFL to ensure government advice is followed at all times, with training at first to involve small, socially-distanced groups. Players and staff will also need to be tested beforehand so anyone who tests positive for the virus can self-isolate.

Teams would ideally require around a month of training before playing competitive matches but the four sides chasing promotion through the play-offs in League Two are likely to get no more than three weeks due to the tight timeframe.

Speaking about a return to training, manager Keith Curle said: "A few players had picked up some little niggles but they've gone and any players who have had concerns have been in contact with Nacho and Pablo in the fitness department.

"Obviously we haven't been able to get hands-on treatment but the medical department are happy with where the players are at with the information we've got back from them.

"We'd rather go back in and have a mini pre-season but we know the players are not going to get as fit as they would be after 30 odd games, but we know we can get them fit and they'll be in a good place to compete.

"The players are ready and they're champing at the bit to get back to work. Now we need to modify their training and start shortening their distances and competitive runs that are more akin to football rather than just general fitness."
