Cobblers are currently monitoring a number of trialists with manager Jon Brady focused on strengthening his defensive ranks prior to the start of the new League Two campaign.

Town have brought in eight players this summer but most of those are either in attacking positions or between the posts, with Jon Guthrie the only defender recruited so far.

Guthrie is one of just four senior defenders available to Brady at present but that is certain to change in the coming weeks, with several trialists training at the club. Head of recruitment Martin Foyle is also hard at work.

"We still have a few spots to fill in the squad and a few places available and we are looking at some of the options that we have," said Brady. "We have a few trialists with us at the moment and that is making training very competitive as they look to make their mark.

"We have got more recruitment work to do, and the balance of the squad is not as we want it yet. There are still positions available, particularly in defensive areas and that is what we are working on at the moment.

"We will have a few players in on trial over the next few weeks so we can cast our eye over them and take a close look at them and Martin Foyle is also hard at work assessing some targets for us too."
