Cobblers currently planning for the season to resume in early April

The Cobblers will be 'fully prepared' to face league leaders Crewe Alexandra on April 4 should the season resume as currently planned, but CEO James Whiting admits all options remain on the table.

The EFL and Premier League suspended all fixtures last Friday as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which has decimated sporting events across the globe.

The Cobblers will not play again until April 4 but a return even on that date seems optimistic if the coronavirus continues to spread across the country.

Various governing bodies will meet this week to discuss the next stage, but until the picture becomes clearer Northampton can only plan to resume the season early next month.

Whiting said: "I think we can all have our personal views and the Government have been talking about when the peak of the virus might be, but it's a fast-moving situation and it's best not to speculate at this point.

"All we can do is deal with the facts as and when they are and at the minute we're not playing football until April 4.

"Currently, we're expecting a game against Crewe on that date and until we're told otherwise, we'll be doing all we can to do be fully prepared."

The League Two season is scheduled to finish earlier than usual - April 25 - this year, which could mean postponed fixtures are rearranged for May.

"Within the next ten days things should become clearer in terms of the schedule moving forward," said manager Keith Curle.

"We are a sporting organisation whereby to get the maximum benefit for players and spectators, we can't squeeze too many games into too short a period but we do have room to extend the season and maybe play until the end of May if we need to.

"I am sure the EFL will be looking at that, but the main thing of course is to protect the health and safety of everyone involved."
