Cobblers are exploring the possibility of turning one of their loan players into a permanent signing to make room for another addition before next Monday's deadline.

The capture of Peter Kioso from Luton Town means Northampton now have five loan players registered on their books, the maximum number allowed in a matchday squad.

But with manager Keith Curle still hoping to make another addition before the window swings shut next week, they could make one of their loan men - Jonathan Mitchell, Ryan Edmondson, Mickel Miller, Byrn Morris or Kioso - a permanent signing.

"That is an option," said Curle. "You'll find in the transfer window now that some clubs and some players might take up the option of signing permanently.

"Rather than going on loan, sometimes it's more financially viable to cancel the contract instead of loaning a player out.

"If the finances work out favourably for the player and for the parent club, that could be another option during the January transfer window."

Curle has made four signings in January but may not be finished just yet. When asked if he's still in the market for another player, and whether that player will be a creative option, he said: "That's something we're looking at.

"We know we have a very competitive squad and a very capable squad but every manager wants that extra one per cent and I can assure you we are looking for that extra one per cent."
