Keith Curle has hinted Shaun McWilliams could be sent out on loan to build up his match fitness following nine months out with a knee injury.

The 22-year-old played 45 minutes in Town's EFL Trophy tie with Southampton U23s last Tuesday but did not feature in the squad for the visit of Peterborough on Saturday.

"Shaun played 45 minutes on Tuesday and that was his first 45 minutes in eight or nine months," said Curle. "It's all about his return to training and matches and being available for selection because he does need a bank of games now.

"Going out on loan might be an option for him to get some games but it's something we're monitoring in terms of his level of performance in training because we can't afford to get him fit during games.

"He's doing all the extra work that's required of him and he's training at a high level but he's been out for eight months and what we don't want to do is injure him by giving him too much, too soon."

Once McWilliams does get up to full speed, he will add to Curle's midfield options.

"It was excellent to see him back and have him back on the grass again," Curle added. "He's been in training for us and Shaun is a player that thrives on competitive encounters so it's great to see him back.

"We are operating with a slightly smaller first-team squad this season so every player will play his part and Shaun has the right attitude and application, not just on gameday but also through the week.

"He's got that competitive edge and he keeps that competitive edge. Whether he's in the squad or out of the squad, his demeanour doesn't change and I like that about Shaun."
