Cobblers boss Wilder closing in on new signing

The Cobblers are confident of signing at least one more player as they bid to strengthen their title-chasing squad.

Sky Bet League Two leaders Town are without a game on Saturday as scheduled opponents, Oxford United, are in FA Cup fourth round action against Blackburn Rovers.

But Chris Wilder is still keen to get any signing business done well in advance of the transfer window closing at midnight on Monday (February 1), and it is understood he will make a move for a player before the weekend.

Town have been strongly linked with Southend United central defender Luke Prosser, with Wilder confirming he is still interested in a player he tried to buy last summer.

Prosser has made it clear to Southend United boss Phil Brown that he wants to leave Roots Hall, and he has been left out of the Shrimpers’ past two matchday squads.

It has been reported that six other league two clubs as well as the Cobblers have also lodged an interested in taking Prosser, including Leyton Orient, Stevenage and Dagenham & Redbridge.

The Cobblers boss is happy with his high-flying squad as it is, but feels that one or two areas of may need some strength in depth adding, and the central defensive area is one of those with only three specialist players in that position in Zander Diamond, Ryan Cresswell and Rod McDonald on the books.

As for players going the other way and leaving Sixfields, there has still been no confirmed interest in any of the Town players.
