Former Cobblers boss Chris Wilder has sent his congratulations to his old club after watching their play-off final win over Exeter City at Wembley on Monday.

Wilder was the last man to achieve promotion with the Cobblers when he memorably led them to the League Two title in 2016, finishing 13 points clear of the pack.

The now Sheffield United manager left at the end of the season and took charge at his boyhood club, where he remains four years on having guided them to the top half of the Premier League.

But after a difficult few years, Wilder's old club is back on the rise thanks to their 4-0 thrashing of Exeter in the League Two play-off final.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference before their game against Tottenham, Wilder said: "Congratulations to Northampton, my old club.

"I watched that game and I'm delighted for Keith (Curle) and his staff and some of the new players and old ones, and most importantly the chairman.

"I really enjoyed my time there, it was quite a difficult period and it's great that they’ve tasted success.

"I watched it last night and it was brilliant to see. It was really strange, watching at Wembley with no fans, but they looked to enjoy it afterwards from the pictures and videos I've seen.

"Congratulations to Keith and all the players there at Northampton."

David Buchanan, captain under Wilder, tweeted: "Blew them away!! Congratulations NTFC".

And former midfielder Joel Byrom added a little bit of humour, posting: "Congratulations NTFC. Nicky Adams will have his CV sent out to all League Two managers by the morning. It's too windy in League One!"
