Byrom: Cobblers will quickly shrug off FA Cup disappointment

The Town midfielder admitted he was unhappy with how and his team-mates played in Tuesday night’s 3-0 FA Cup third round defeat at Milton Keynes Dons.

The Cobblers were undone by three second-half goals at stadiummk, although two of those were dubious penalties, and Town felt they were also denied a perfectly good goal with the score at 0-0.

Byrom felt aggrieved by those decisions, but he also accepted the Cobblers were far from their best as they allowed Milton Keynes to set up a televised fourth-round tie against Premier League champions Chelsea on January 31.

“It’s a tough place to come but I don’t think we’ve given a great account of ourselves on the night,” admitted the former Preston North End midfielder.

“We huffed and puffed but we haven’t played with the same quality that we have done week in week out.

“The 3-0 probably flatters them a little bit but at the end of the day we’ve not been good enough.

“We’re disappointed but we’ve got to move on to Saturday now because it’s a massive game against Morecambe in the league.

“As we always do as a squad, we’ll take each game as it comes and the next game is Morecambe now.

“This game has gone so we’ll look towards Thursday and Friday in training when we’ll work hard and get ready to take the three points at the weekend.”

The major plus for Byrom from Tuesday was the superb backing the team got from the 7,000-strong army of travelling fans.

“You don’t see many teams, especially in League One or League Two, who take this many fans to an away game,” said the 29-year-old.

“I’ve never played in front of that many away fans in my whole career.

“It was brilliant. The fans always turn up in their numbers and we fully appreciate it and now I just hope they keep coming until the end of the season.”
