Burge hopes to extend stay at Sixfields but admits to uncertain future

Lee Burge has revealed his desire to extend his stay at Sixfields into a fifth season – but he admits it’s too early to know what the future holds.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper has made 107 appearances across four years with Northampton, and he’s recently re-established himself as the club’s number one between the sticks following a period out of the team. However, with his contract due to expire in the summer, and with Cobblers destined for League Two, his future is unclear.

“There have been some talks but we just have to concentrate on the rest of the season and see what happens in the summer,” said Burge after Friday’s 1-0 defeat at Bradford. “I’d obviously like to stay but nobody’s future is certain at the moment and we have to focus on finishing the season as well as we can.”

Burge has started the last six games after sitting out for Ross Fitzsimons between September and February. He added: "I obviously want to be playing and it’s nice to be back in. I’ve enjoyed being in the team again. It’s obviously a tough period but on a personal level I’m playing now and that’s what I want to do.”

Cobblers produced a better performance at Valley Parade but slipped to a sixth straight defeat.

"It was an improved performance but we needed to take one of those early chances and it might have been a different game,” Burge continued. “We were on the front foot and we can take heart from certain aspects but at the end of the day it’s another defeat.

"I felt we moved the ball better and we have to take positives from these little steps. All we can do is keep fighting. We know the position we’re in, it’s tough, but we’re trying to do our best and hopefully something falls for us in the next game.”
