Departing captain Charlie Goode has made a kind gesture to the Northampton Town academy following his transfer to Brentford.

The 25-year-old centre-back left a lasting impression on the club after 18 months and 62 games of almost immaculate service.

He now heads to the Premier League-chasing Bees for a club record fee, but not before making a departing gift.

Cobblers chairman Kelvin Thomas was delighted with the gesture, and explained the circumstances.

"This is a fantastic and a really impressive move from Charlie," he said.

"Charlie was contractually due some money from the club but he has decided to donate part of that money to help support the work we do with the young players at the club's academy.

"Footballers sometimes have a bad reputation but this is a terrific gesture from a fantastic character.

"To make such a gesture at a time when there is so much uncertainty in the world shows how much affection Charlie has for the club and how much affection we have for him.

"A few of the players have spoken about the integrity the club has shown through this pandemic and gestures such as this really underline that.

"We thank Charlie for everything he has done for the club and wish him every success at his new club."
