Jordan Turnbull and Alan McCormack are among 13 players who have been released by the Cobblers.

David Cornell, Paul Anderson and Andy Williams, plus a number of young players, are also set to depart the club just a few days after their play-off final win against Exeter City.

Turnbull is the biggest surprise given his fine form over the past 18 months. The 25-year-old, who signed for the Cobblers in January 2018, made 42 appearances this season, scoring five goals, and was a mainstay of Keith Curle's impressive back three.

However, he will not be offered a new deal and is set to leave the club two and a half years after joining from Coventry.

McCormack's departure will also raise a few eyebrows following his excellent performances in the play-offs, although the 36-year-old, who only joined the club last summer, did miss large chunks of the season through injury.

Goalkeeper Cornell leaves after four seasons at the club while Williams and Anderson also head for pastures new having both played their part during Town's promotion-winning campaign.

Teenager Jay Williams played a handful of games in 2018/19 but struggled for appearances this season and now departs, as do fellow youngsters Jack Newell, Bradley Lashley, Camron McWilliams, Sean Whaler and Ryan Hughes.

Reece Hall-Johnson and Billy Waters are also released.

"This is always a difficult part of the job, particularly after winning promotion on Monday night," said Curle. "My job is to make these decisions for the betterment of the football club and to look to the future.

"First and foremost I would like to thank all of the players collectively for their efforts. I cannot speak highly enough of their attitudes and their commitment.

“As we look to the future, there has to be a continued progression and development both individually and collectively as we look to continue our journey on our upward curve. As a club, our challenge this summer is to produce a squad that can be competitive in League 1 next season and that means we will need to strengthen in certain areas."
