Cobblers striker Harry Smith has left the club and joined Scottish side Motherwell on loan until the end of the season.

The 25-year-old had been a regular in the team up until December 15 but since then he has not started a league game, with Danny Rose and Benny Ashley-Seal preferred.

Town manager Keith Curle also bolstered his forward ranks this month with the additions of Mickel Miller and Ryan Edmondson. Smith's departure makes room in the squad for another signing before the end of the transfer window, should Curle wish to strengthen further.

The 6ft 5in striker signed a three-year deal with Northampton in the summer of 2019 after moving from Macclesfield Town. He scored seven goals last season before his campaign was curtailed by a serious ankle injury suffered at Crawley Town on Boxing Day.

Smith netted a spot-kick against Cardiff in the League Cup on the opening day of the current season but it was not until mid-November when he found the net again, scoring three goals in two games at Burton and then Rochdale.

Another dry spell followed though and he slid down the pecking order as a result, paving the way for an exit from the club, at least temproarily.
