Former title-winning hero Ricky Holmes has made a sensational return to the Cobblers by agreeing an appearance-related contract.

The 33-year-old left Sixfields a hero in 2016 after playing a starring role in Town's memorable title win under Chris Wilder. Holmes scored 16 times in 53 matches across 18 months during his first spell and netted a series of stunning individual goals en route to the League Two title.

He left for Charlton Athletic the following summer before teaming up with Wilder again at Sheffield United, but it was at the Cobblers where his career really took off and his return will delight supporters.

After battling a debilitating back injury, Holmes might have retired if not for Northampton fitness coach Pablo Garcia. He has been working with the club for the past few weeks and impressed enough in training to earn a short-term deal.

Holmes has also played for Barnet, Portsmouth and Oxford United. His last competitive fixture came nearly two years ago, a 3-0 win over Tottenham U23s in December 2018, but he could be in the squad to face MK Dons on Tuesday evening.
