Cobblers winger Nicky Adams has left the club and joined League Two side Oldham Athletic on an 18-month contract.

The 34-year-old has been a favourite with Cobblers supporters since 2015/16 when he played a starring role during the club's memorable title success under Chris Wilder.

He left the following summer to team up with Keith Curle at Carlisle United but returned to Northampton in the summer of 2019, again under Curle, and secured another promotion 12 months later.

Adams topped the assists chart last season as Town thrashed Exeter City 4-0 at an empty Wembley Stadium in the play-off final, however he has found his opportunities more limited in League One.

The former Bury and Rochdale man, who also had a two-year spell at Leicester City during the early stages of his career, made 63 appearances in his second spell at the Cobblers but managed only 10 league starts this season.

With family in Greater Manchester, Adams has made the decision to return closer to home by signing an 18-month deal with the Latics, who are 16th in League Two.

His departure frees up another space in the squad should Curle want to bring in more bodies before the window shuts on February 1.
