Cobblers sign Nottingham Forest defender on deadline day

Cobblers have secured a deadline day deal for defender Josh Powell.

The 21-year-old left-back, who can play in several positions, heads to Sixfields on a season-long loan from Premier League side Nottingham Forest. He is the club’s 11th summer signing, third on loan, and first on deadline day, with at least one more in the pipeline.

"Josh will provide depth and competition in the back line," said manager Chris Hogg. "He has experience of this level, he is a player who can play at full-back or across the back line and someone who I know Nottingham Forest think highly of.

“He will boost us, he has good attributes and is a good character. We felt we needed more depth in that area and we are pleased to welcome Josh to Northampton Town."

Powell has come through Forest’s academy and made his professional debut during a loan spell at Colchester United in the 2025/26 season. He played 15 times for the U’s before heading to Fleetwood in January, making another 18 appearances.

Powell is described as an energetic, hard-working and attack-minded full-back.
