It has been confirmed that Cobblers will take on Cheltenham Town in the League Two play-off semi-final after clubs voted to curtail the regular season this afternoon.

League Two clubs had indicated last month their desire not to continue with league matches due to the coronavirus pandemic and that was confirmed in Tuesday’s vote.

Earlier, clubs across the Championship, League One and League Two approved a framework that will see tables settled by a points-per-game format, with promotion and relegation to remain in place, in the event of a curtailment.

It was also agreed that the play-offs should go ahead between four teams as usual, paving the way for League One and League Two clubs to vote on those proposals this afternoon.

Clubs in the fourth tier were almost unanimous in their support of the framework, with all remaining fixtures therefore cancelled. Forest Green Rovers chairman Dale Vince revealed on Twitter that they were the only club to vote against an early curtailment.

With PGG now applied to the table, Cobblers finish seventh and inside the play-offs, just ahead of Port Vale. They will face Cheltenham in a two-legged semi-final after the Robins leapfrogged Exeter City to take fourth spot.

Swindon Town are crowned champions and will be joined in League One next season by Crewe Alexandra and Plymouth Argyle. The other play-off tie will be played between Exeter and Colchester United.

Stevenage finish bottom and therefore face relegation to non-league, though Macclesfield Town are being investigated for failing to pay their players on time and could yet face a further points deduction, which would drop them below Stevenage.

It is expected that the National League will follow a similar model and promote two teams, one of which looks certain to be leaders Barrow.
